Celebrate African-American Arts this Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 12-5pm at the Hudson River Museum in Hudson Valley, NY. This family-friendly program will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of activities for your enjoyment. Workshops and Activities include:
Leather Art-Making and Workshop (12-3pm): Artist John Ashford creates leather art in the style of Winfred Rembert. Make your own leather collage in a workshop led by Junior Docents.
Family Drop-In Workshops (12-3pm): Make images with felt and carved colorful reliefs. Led by Junior Docents.
Family Gallery Tour (1-1:30pm): Walk the galleries and talk with scholar Clifton Watson to learn about artist Winfred Rembert’s life in civil-rights era Georgia. A grandson of Southern migrants, Watson grew up in New Haven’s black community. He encourages you to critique images of historical moments, using your understanding of current social, political and cultural trends.
In-Gallery Storytelling and Spirituals (2-3pm): Storyteller and singer Vienna Carroll and friends present excerpts from her work Singin Wid A Sword in Ma Han, a musical docudrama about a Maryland family determined to escape
from slavery in the 1850s. Singin uses real escape routes, characters and locations in portraying the family’s quest for freedom.
Planetarium Show (12:30 and 2pm): The Sky Tonight: Follow the Drinking Gourd, Fact and Fiction
Did slaves in the South really use the Big Dipper, the “Drinking Gourd,” to find the way north? We explore this and more.
Harambee Dance Company (3:15-4:15pm): In vibrant costume, the Harambee Dance Company weaves African based movement, dance, and percussion.
